In the setting of an international school, with all its abundant multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and religious influences, History must play a dynamic part in the education of every pupil. The narrative drive, giant personalities and dramatic events should be imbued in every student through passionate and stimulating teaching. The aim is that by the end of Year 9 each pupil should have some grasp of the History across the continents, alongside a basic grasp of the essay writing and document analysis skills that are needed in the examination years. At IGCSE and A Level we want pupils to investigate and think for themselves, as History creates enquiring minds that enjoy discussion, whilst tying their studies into current affairs. By the end of Year 13 we aim to have produced History students who can face the world with the ability to express themselves lucidly on the page and engage with controversial topics through debate, along with going out into the world with a questioning and analytical approach that does not necessarily accept received wisdom.

Years 7 – 9 (Key Stage Three)
The curriculum at Key Stage 3reflects the multicultural nature of the school’s intake as well as preparing students for examination demands in later years. The curriculum is as follows:-
• Year 7: The Medieval World (African, European and Islamic history)
• Year 8: Terms 1 & 2: Exploration, Slavery and Empire (Voyages of discovery, slavery and the impact of imperialism on India and Africa) Term 3: African Studies Project – What is your African identity?
• Year 9: The Twentieth Century World (From the sinking of the Titanic to Kamuzu)
There are three lessons of History across the two week timetable in Years 7-9
Years 10 – 11 (IGCSE)
We follow the Edexcel IGCSE Modern World History course, with the main area of study being the 20th Century. Our study topics are:
• The Russian Revolution, 1905-24 (Document analysis paper)
• Weimar & Nazi Germany, 1918-45 (Depth Study)
• South Africa 1948-1994 (Depth Study)
• International Relations 1919-2011 – attempts by the League of Nations and United Nations at
peacekeeping in, amongst others, Ethiopia, Korea, Israel, Congo, Lebanon, Somalia (Breadth Study)
The examination has two papers, each are 1hr 30 minutes long. There are no tiered papers and students of all abilities take both papers. There are four lessons of History across the two week timetable in both Years 10 and 11.
At A-Level we follow the Cambridge International A-Level course. We aim to build on the base of knowledge that students have acquired IGCSE History. We avoid repetition as we want to produce rounded History students who have a true appreciation of the forces that have made the modern world, rather than students who have pursued a narrow focus purely for examination success.
A/S course (Year 12)
CIE International Relations 1871 to 1945. This is divided into TWO components.
Component 1: Source Questions (1hr 15 min exam, 40% of the A/S Level) Component 2: Essay Questions (1hr 45 min exam, 60% of the A/S Level)
The topic for Component One is chosen by CIE at the start of each year from one of the FOUR key topics.
Component Two covers the remaining three topics. Topics include: the Scramble for Africa, the Rise of the USA, the Rise of Japan, attempts to maintain peace in the 1920, the League of Nations and WW2, USSR’s attempts at relations with the ‘West’ and China and Japan 1912-1945.
A2 course (Year 13)
Component 3: The Causes and Impact of British Imperialism c.1850-1939 (Interpretations paper)
Component 4: The History of the USA 1945-1990 (Essay questions)
There are fourteen lessons of History across the two week timetable in Year 12 and ten lessons of History across the two week timetable in Year 13.
The department has its own small History block including a stockroom and office. We have networked PCs in all classrooms and mounted digital projectors allowing us to access and analyse the thousands of sources now available online. We also have a set of tablets that allow students to conduct their own research in class. Alongside specialist textbooks, we have also contributed much to the school library and now have an up-to-date, wide range of books that complement our courses as well as encouraging wider reading around all topics within History.
The department has three very experienced staff, with a track record of impressive exam results.
