Key Stage 4

In year 9 our students approach a crossroads in their life.  This crossroads is about choosing their option subjects for Year 10, and this could impact upon their future career.

In Years 10 and 11 students will be following a two-year course of study in GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) or IGCSE (the international version of GCSE) subjects.  External examinations in these subjects will be taken in May-June of Year 11.

In 2012  for the first time, we were able to offer a BTEC course in Business Studies and BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Children’s Care, Learning and Development to Yr 10 students. The assessment process for both of these courses results in the grade for each unit of work making up their final examination grade. There is no final examination at the end of Year 11.

The exam boards which set and mark these examinations are CIE (Cambridge), AQA, or Edexcel examination boards.

All these examinations are equal in standard.  The syllabus chosen is deemed the most suitable by the Senior Managers of the school in liaison with each subject Head of Department.

Most students have the opportunity to study ten subjects.  It is part of the educational philosophy of St Andrew’s that students follow a broad, balanced, and academically challenging curriculum.

It is inappropriate at this stage to narrow down the subjects studied so that students are labelled as an artist or a scientist.

Whilst all students must study certain compulsory subjects they also have the opportunity to choose option subjects.  This is why it is very important that students get as much advice as possible before making subject choices.
