Physics is the study of the world around you. It explains how things work, from the building blocks of matter to the electricity in your house.

Physics explains the fundamental forces of nature and the relevance of these to everyday life.

Physics answers questions like; why is the sky blue? What is the universe made of? How did the Earth get to be here?

Department Information

Science is taught on a carosel in Years 8 & 9 where students get to experience all the disciplines over two years. Once in Year 9, students specialise and take Physics as a subject.

The Year 9 course serves as an introduction to the IGCSE course and all the material covered is from the IGCSE specification.

Most lessons will involve a certain amount of practical work. Students then continue to finished the IGCSE course in Years 10 and 11 with the option to continue to AS/A2 level with acceptable grades.

Topics Taught:

Topics taught in Physics from Year 9 onwards include:

  • Motion and motion graphs;
  • Pressure;
  • Gravity and space;
  • Electric circuits;
  • Radioactivity

As well as learning topics, students also develop key skills. They must have a genuine interest in finding out about how things work and how the pieces of the world you live in fit together. They must be able to think clearly and logically and to want to solve problems. An understanding of basic scientific concepts and a good mathematical ability are also useful skills for Physicists.

Particular skills taught in lessons include:

  • learning how to solve problems mathematically and by logical and analytical argument;
  • showing how to perform experiments correctly and accurately and understand the importance of measurement;
  • discovering the importance of past scientific discoveries by famous Scientists such as Newton, Einstein, Joule, etc…



In Year 9, each unit will be assessed using a written paper based on National Curriculum assessments and IGCSE questions. In order to monitor their progress relative to their target grade, students will be given a National Curriculum level after each assessment.

Students will also be given guidance on their potential grade at IGCSE and the end of year exam will be awarded an IGCSE grade.

In years 10 and 11, students follow the Edexcel IGCSE. It is examined through written papers only, no coursework. All students will sit the same two papers. Paper 1 lasts for two hours and assesses the entire core knowledge and skills, whilst paper 2 contains a range of more challenging questions designed to assess the A*-B candidates.

Although there is no practical examination, practical work forms an important part of the course and is assessed through data hand-handling and analysis questions on paper 2.

Students who intend studying Physics at AS level will be expected to gain an A*-B grade at IGCSE.


Homework is set once a week. Homework will include questions set from the pupils’ text book research topics, work based on experiments completed in class and revision for assessments.  ​
