SAIntS Examination Information

Saint Andrew’s International High School (SAIntS) offers GCSE and International GCSE examinations to all students in year 11, and GCE (AS, A level, and International A level ) examinations to all students in years 12 and 13.  In exceptional cases, students in other years may be offered the opportunity to take GCSE/International GCSE examinations early.  This is usually for students in any year who wish to take a language exam which isn’t normally taught at the school (e.g. Afrikaans, Chinese, German, Greek, Portuguese, etc.)  These exams may only be offered if they can be easily administered by the Head of Languages and the Examinations Officer, and do not impact on the normal teaching day or clash with other external examinations to an unacceptable degree.

The school uses the following UK based Examination Boards:-

  • Edexcel Pearson (formally the London Examinations Board) – IGCSE, GCSE, GCE
  • AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance) – GCSE and GCE
  • OCR (Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations) GCE
  • CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) – IGCSE and GCE

Edexcel Pearson, AQA and OCR are all part of the UK Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) – an umbrella body that administers external qualifications.

CIE is a Board used primarily by schools outside the UK and is not part of the JCQ.  It is not, therefore, subject to their regulations.

Head of Departments are responsible for choosing the most appropriate syllabus and board for their students. If students are unsure which board they are studying for a particular subject, they should speak to their subject teacher.

There are three main exam sessions in the academic year:

  1. May/June – this is the main period for GCSE, IGCSE and GCE examinations. These exams can commence at the end April and continue until the end of June.
  2. October/November – this is usually to cater for CIE exams which only offer a November slot in subjects such as Afrikaans. It also offers re-sit opportunities in some IGCSE and GCE subjects.
  3. January – this is predominantly for year 13 students doing certain International A Level re-sits. This is at the discretion of the Senior Leadership Team in conjunction with the Head of Year 13 and the relevant Heads of Department. International GCSE re-sits in Edexcel Pearson English and Maths now also take place in this session and is primarily for those in years 12 and 13 who failed to achieve the C grade necessary for University entrance. In exceptional circumstances, there may be re-sit opportunities in other subjects (e.g. where a student was unable to sit the exam in May/June due to ill health etc.)

BTEC courses are vocationally specific qualifications that are currently 100% course work based and internally assessed through a range of assignments for each unit over a year.

Each programme has an annual Standards Verification visit whose purpose is to ratify teachers grades and to provide feedback on Quality Assurance systems and processes – all reports to date have demonstrated the high level of commitment and work that both our staff and students produce.
